Experience-based Education

Outside the Classroom

Our faculty are active artists, designers, and scholars with strong connections across the art world. They regularly bring visiting professionals into the classroom and studio, offering students opportunities to engage directly with artists and leaders through lectures, workshops, and critiques.

As part of one of Georgia’s four research universities, the department hosts a vibrant schedule of exhibitions, events, and field trips to regional art venues. These experiences extend learning beyond the classroom and connect students to the broader creative community.

The Mary S. Byrd Gallery of Art, located on campus, plays a central role in this environment. The gallery features thoughtful and relevant exhibitions by contemporary artists at all stages of their careers, providing students with ongoing exposure to current practices in the field.
