Emergency closures

Storm Floris - amber warning

The National Severe Weather Warning for very strong winds in Scotland has been  from 10am through to 10pm on Monday 4 August. Storm Floris is forecast to bring unseasonably disruptive storm with very strong winds and some heavy rain across the northern half of the UK on Monday. 

The yellow warning covering the northern half of the UK remains in place from 6am to 11.59pm on Monday 4 August. 

We will continue to monitor the storm and will keep this page update on any further disruption to our services.

Household recycling centres

For the safety of our employees and residents, we have taken the decision to close all our recycling centres. You will not be able to book a slot for Monday 4 August. 

Pest control appointments

For the safety of our employees and residents, we have taken the decision to prioritise only urgent pest control jobs before 10am. If you had an appointment for today, we will contact you to as soon as possible to rebook. We plan to work evenings and weekends to catch up on missed appointments.

Council parks and greenspaces

Princes Street Gardens is closed today Monday 4 August and potentially tomorrow Tuesday 5 August

Please take care if you are out in our parks or greenspaces, particularly in areas with trees. They are in full leaf and more likely to be toppled or limbs broken off.

Council venues and buildings

These venues and buildings are closed today Monday 4 August

  • Lauriston Castle and grounds
  • cemeteries - Warriston, Comley Bank and Mortonhall cemeteries are closed due to risk of tree or branches falling
  • our education and children services team is assessing any risk for all outdoor areas and will continue to monitor the weather in case early closures are required.

Please note Fox Covert Early Years Centre is closed due to due to having no water.

Fallen trees

If you're concerned about fallen or dangerous, overhanging branches or trees, please report them to our forestry service immediately. Call us on 0131 200 2000 or contact us . We will respond to reports of large fallen trees and prioritise any that posed a potential danger to the public or are blocking roads and paths. Any not posing any immediate risk will be dealt with later. 

Festivals events

These performances and events have been cancelled today (Monday 4 August)

  • Edinburgh International Military Tattoo at the Castle has been cancelled - 
  • Edinburgh International Festival's Ceilidh Sessions in the Ross Bandstand, Princes Street Gardens - .

Edinburgh Fringe has also advised so far that

  • street performances on the High Street and the Mound are cancelled
  • Pleasance Courtyard is closed until 6pm
  • Spiegeltent at St Andrews, The Pitt, Hoots at Potterow are closed
  • today's peformances by the Lady Boys of Bangkok is cancelled.
